HOW SEASONAL CHANGES AFFECT OUR SKIN

28/6/2017

Like our bodies, our skin has to adapt to seasonal changes. To keep it in tip top shape, we need to understand its natural cycle and pamper it accordingly.

Our skin, as with the seasons, goes through different phases. Cold weather, sunshine, air conditioning and central heating can harm our skin, which is highly sensitive to climatic change. And it's with the arrival of spring and autumn that our skin really bears the brunt. During these intermediate seasons, with their topsy-turvy weather, our skin has to work harder to adapt.

AUTUMN, A TRANSITIONAL PHASE When our skin is no longer 'protected' by our tan, blemishes return with avengeance: wrinkles, dry skin, sagginess, redness and, in some cases, an increase in sebum production. The skin becomes pale, loses tone and dehydrates. Worn out by autumn's seasonal changes, our skin craves treatments that will give it back its glow; this is the time to mollycoddle it with invigorating scrubs, moisturising face masks and beneficial treatments.

WINTER, WHEN OUR EPIDERMIS HIBERNATES During winter, our skin has to confront wind, cold and temperature changes between heated homes and the freezing outdoors. Our skin's metabolism decreases, our circulation slows down and cell renewal is reduced. The result is our skin can lose its healthy glow. Our epidermis needs a rest. It cries out for richer moisturisers and comforting ingredients.

SPRING, A TIME TO BLOOM As the season springs to life, so does our skin! Having been numbed by the cold and shorter daylight hours, it's time to wake up our skin. Having been bombarded with toxins throughout winter and sensitised by the return of skin allergies this is the moment to scrub and deeply cleanse.

SUMMER, A DANGEROUS SEASON Skin needs all the help it can to combat damage caused by the sun: its sebum fluidifies, its pores open, it sweats and it has a hard time dealing with greasy products. Fully hydrating our skin is the key! As soon as the sun pokes out its head, we need to swap rich creams for lighter textures and do everything we can to protect our skin from harmful UV ray.
